Watching Television on my PC or smartphone makes me wonder whether the television really is going to come of age by making the transition from a dedicated box of electronics that until recently housed a glass cathode ray tube for viewing programs to the most versatile box of bells and whistles that has ever been used in the family home.

To view TV right now I have two satellite dishes and an interface box parked next to my telly and I have to wade through hundreds of irrelevant foreign language channels to find favourite or desired programs. Using a PC as a home entertainment and telecommunications centre makes perfect sense least of all because of its search facilities. That has made surfing the internet a piece of cake and promises to do the same for television, shopping and everyday business; the transition that will transform our lives is on its way.

The TV to PC or Mobile needs no additional hardware and the software companies only make a small charge to access television from any where and from almost any country. This makes information accessible to most people and especially those who cannot afford the monthly cost of satellite or cable.

But there is a snag, the line speed for most people needs to be higher and more stable to achieve uninterrupted viewing unless the programme is intelligently spooled to disk. When this small but important technical problem has been over-come through lower port loading on Wide Area Networks whch means more infrastructure investment by cable company's then the PC will transmute itself into a true all-things-to-all-people entertainment centre.

But we are on the brink of a technological breakthrough where line speed will be unlimited; it's just around the corner and in some countries the bandwidth is already unlimited.

The configuration that will probably be most attractive will be large screen video phone calls and conferance calls using Skype used in conjunction with DVD recordings for TV with all the office and internet facilities that the PC already offers for use at home. For watching mobile phone TV to keep abreast of sports news or the money markets a mobile phone is the best choice; it avoids having to carry a box that weighs like a spare brick in the pocket or handbag.

Armchair shopping for all the regular weekly/ monthly things through TV linked to the information cloud is going to become a reality- all the building blocks are here they just need to be packaged for the average home. And that should create more spare time for recreation and Eco-Friendliness.

This simple step of broadcasting TV to computers and mobile phones will enhance the proliferation of Western Culture, politics, sport and beliefs; perhaps a world more shaped by Hollywood, Bollywood and CNN. The developments of thought and opinions will be interesting to observe when this innovation becomes a main stream everyday technology.
